Characterization of mean groundwater age and recharge temperature through the use of noble gas techniques provides information that is relevant to answering these questions and that is not accessible through traditional hydrogeologic approaches. Description LLNL has developed a noble gas mass spectrometry facility that houses a state-of-the-art water-gas separation manifold and mass spectrometry system designed specifically for high throughput of groundwater samples.

This system represents a capability for characterizing groundwater recharge conditions by dissolved gas analysis that is unmatched by any other laboratory. Construction of this facility was funded by LLNL. The facility is staffed by Ph. Less model-dependent than tritium age dating: Traditional tritium age-dating is confounded by mixing between old tritium-dead water and young tritiated water, and requires modeling, assumptions or independent estimates of the mixing ratio to convert measured tritium activity into a groundwater age.

When mixing is ignored, as it often is, tritium alone can overestimate the mean age of the modern less than 50 year age component. High throughput and rapid turn-around: The fully automated, computer-controlled manifold system allows for rapid analysis of the full suite of noble gases, and allows determination of tritium through helium-3 accumulation.

Ice-sheet dynamics Sampling the surface of Taku Glacier in Alaska. There is increasingly dense firn between surface snow and blue glacier ice. An ice core is a vertical column through a glacier, sampling the layers that formed through an annual cycle of snowfall and melt. At Summit Camp in Greenland, the depth is 77 m and the ice is years old; at Dome C in Antarctica the depth is 95 m and the age years.

Ice is lost at the edges of the glacier to icebergs , or to summer melting, and the overall shape of the glacier does not change much with time. These can be located using maps of the flow lines. These include soot, ash, and other types of particle from forest fires and volcanoes ; isotopes such as beryllium created by cosmic rays ; micrometeorites ; and pollen.

DPT and environmental tracers were combined to characterise alluvial aquifers. However, characterising groundwater resources in this remote part of Australia is challenging due to a lack of existing infrastructure and data. Here, direct push technology DPT was used to characterise shallow alluvial aquifers at two locations in the semiarid Flinders River catchment. DPT was used to evaluate the saturated thickness of the aquifer and estimate recharge rates by sampling for environmental tracers in groundwater major ions, 2H, 18O, 3H and 14C.

The alluvium at Fifteen Mile Reserve and Glendalough Station consisted of a mixture of permeable coarse sandy and gravely sediments and less permeable clays and silts.

The provision of pedigree registration services is one of the SSBA’s core activities. However, due to the recent rapid expansion of the breed society, our existing service was struggling to cope with the increased demand. A subcommittee of the SSBA’s Council was appointed last autumn to investigate viable and affordable options for a new service, provided by an outside contractor or organisation. Having considered several options in detail, the Council agreed unanimously to appoint Ruth, who has a proven track record of carrying out similar registration services for two other breed societies over the past decade.

She will be responsible for access to Ped eWeb and will continue to produce the Society’s annual flock book from data provided by the Grassroots’ system. She will also assist with transferring all our pedigree data onto the new system, working alongside Ruth and Grassroots to make the change-over as seamless as possible.

The SSBA is very grateful to Alison for handling its registrations for 21 years, and for helping us move to the new system. Ruth will be using Grassroots’ “Breed Society Record” software to process our registrations. This system has, more or less, become the industry standard.
