A Way of Death It might be argued that lurid stories of human sacrifice were simply propaganda, conjured-up by classical writers to justify Roman actions, but there may well be some truth in them. For instance, at Danebury hillfort, Hampshire, animal and human remains whole bodies and body parts , deposited in disused storage pits, could be the result of sacrifice. At Glastonbury Lake Village, two roundhouses had a child’s skeleton in the floor, a further seven children had been buried between buildings, and one was found in the peat outside the perimeter palisade. There were no other inhumations, so it seems that these were ritual deposits, though there is no indication of sacrifice. On the other hand four adult skulls, associated with the perimeter, were damaged by sword blows. These might be the heads of sacrificial victims, or they could, possibly, be the heads of vanquished enemies: At any rate, Poseidonius says that he himself saw this spectacle in many places, and that, although at first he loathed it, afterwards, through his familiarity with it, he could bear it calmly. The heads of enemies of high repute, however, they used to embalm in cedar-oil and exhibit to strangers, and they would not deign to give them back even for a ransom of an equal weight of gold. But the Romans put a stop to these customs, as well as to those connected with the sacrifices and divinations that are opposed to our usages.
The purpose of this survey is to identify and record properties of historic and architectural significance in each community. Presently, archaeological resources are treated in a separate survey effort. The surveys are designed to identify districts, structures, and sites eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, and suggest priorities for historic preservation activities.
Upon completion of each survey, a brief report is written. The resulting documentation provides essential information for local, state, and federal preservation planning.

Antique ceramics have a tendency to be fussy and excessively decorative, but pottery is solid, and tactile, and down to earth literally in a way which I find captivating. His Standardware, though highly sought after today, was intended to make pottery accessible to anyone who wanted to own it. Scott Marshall and Richard Jenkyns, who co-founded the Boscean Pottery in the s, studied at the Leach pottery, and were famed for their traditional and functional earthenware pieces.
I had a lovely discussion last week with the wife of Richard Jenkyns about the difference in casserole dishes between the two potters. Even if it formed part of a wider set or was destined to be a receptacle for dry pasta or breakfast cereal, every one of the pots we bought was hand thrown and decorated, and was completely unique. Its blemishes and imperfections and the odd stray fingerprint made it all the more lovely. We are pleased that the sale has received such a positive reception, and hope that the tradition of hand throwing pots in the local area will remain vibrant for many years to come.
The Boscean Pottery has now closed after 52 years of production.

A chapel in the main cathedral of Aachen houses four major relics believed to be from biblical times. They were never exhibited before the fourteenth century and since then only infrequently. They are the swaddling clothes of the Infant Jesus; the cloak of Our Lady; the loin cloth of Christ on the Cross; and the cloth on which lay the head of John the Baptist after his beheading.
The separate reliquaries containing them are in themselves works of art. Great pilgrimages flock to Aachen to venerate these treasures in July of every seventh year, when they are on exhibition. In January an eighteen-year-old native girl had a premonition that her father had met with an accident in the salt mines where he worked.
In her anxiety she looked out the window and saw the face of the Virgin Mary appearing on the window glass. Her father reported a serious accident at the mine that afternoon but he was unhurt. The glass panel was removed, washed, and scraped in an attempt to remove the image, but all attempts to obliterate the image failed.
The cherished glass was placed in a small chapel nearby, and six candles are always burning before the picture, which has become a place of pilgrimage. It was originally a small statue of the Madonna, set in a frame of shells at a spot often visited by Barbary robbers. Fishermen came there to pray for safe voyages. In time, the grotto became a chapel and eventually a large church.

Cedar chests date from times when brides made and brought most of their fine household items into a marriage. Learning about an old cedar chest, even one manufactured in 20th century America, is a small lesson in marital history. Learning how to date a Lane cedar chest will tell a story of someone’s marriage–and perhaps one of your own as well. Before the 19th century notion of marrying strictly for love could be supported by a manufacturing economy, marriages were often a financial concern and both bride and groom, along with their families, brought financial responsibilities to the arrangement.
